No Bruce Willis? No Problem For Woody Allen, Who Casts Steve Carell To Replace Departed Star

Four days after Willis left the ensemble of Allen’s new film, Carell has been tapped to take over the role. He now joins a cast that includes Blake Lively, Parker Posey, Kristen Stewart, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeannie Berlin, Corey Stoll, Ken Stott, Anna Camp, Stephen Kunken, Sari Lennick and Paul Schneider. The swap-out keeps the production on schedule for the pic, which as usual is being kept under wraps. It shoots this month in New York and Los Angeles. (DH)

Ben Affleck Continues Filling Out His ‘Live By Night’ Cast, Even as He Delves Further Into Superhero Territory

Chris Messina will join the cast of Affleck’s adaptation of the Dennis Lehane novel, which Affleck is acting in, as well as writing and directing. The Prohibition-era crime drama already has cast Elle Fanning, Sienna Miller, and Zoe Saldana, and was scheduled to shoot for a 2016 release, but that was pushed to 2017 because of Affleck’s Batman commitments. It’s Taken Him Years, but Joe Carnahan Is Finally Getting ‘Five Against a Bullet’ Off the Ground

Originally boasting a script by Alex Litvak, it’s the story of a Mexican politician whose father is slaughtered by a drug cartel. In order to stay alive during a campaign to clean up his local area, the canny politico hires the five best bodyguards available. Carnahan signed up to re-write and direct in 2014, and its latest momentum comes from former Geffen Records president Jordan Schur, who’s made it part of the slate of his new production company Suretone Pictures. Today In Remake News: 20th Century Fox Is Apparently Serious About Revisiting ‘Oh Heavenly Dog’

Although Chevy Chase considers the original to be his worst movie, it must have at least a few fans at 20th Century Fox as the studio is setting in motion a remake. In the original, Chase played a private eye who stumbled upon a dead body and is soon after killed himself. In order to get into heaven, he inhabits the body of a dog to solve his own murder. The new version will be directed by Tim Hill from a screenplay he wrote with Dave Johnson. (CS)

Now That ‘The Hunger Games’ Is Ending, Has Lionsgate Found Its Next Franchise In the ‘Borderlands’ Video Game?

Game take place on a planet called Pandora, which holds a powerful alien vault that holds untold power for those who can discover it. This story then grows into a rebellion tale where you join up with a group of ragtag outsiders to take down Smilin’ Jack and the evil Hyperion Corporation. All of it takes place within a post-apocalyptic style, futuristic Western locale. Avi Arad and his son Ari are on board to produce. No other attachments were announced. (COL)

In Hindsight, VH1 Decides It Doesn’t Actually Want a Second Season Of ‘Hindsight’, Cancels the Show

Cable net has pulled the plug on the drama series, which was preparing to film its second season. The decision comes amid belt-tightening at Viacom cablers and regime change at VH1, where Chris McCarthy took over the general manager post from Tom Calderone in July. Show had a well-received first season run and was renewed in March. It revolved around a woman who winds up transported back in time 15 years and given the chance to re-do her life. (VAR)
