Singer announced via Twitter that he will take the reins of a new adaptation of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. David Fincher had been attached to the project for some time, but left it last year. Now, Singer will follow up his latest X-Men film with a remake of the Jules Verne story. Singer shares a story credit with the project’s screenwriters, Rick Sordelet and Dan Studney. (CB)
Denzel Washington Gets His Director’s and Producer’s Hats Out For a Big Deal With HBO
The two-time Oscar winner announced he will produce 10 of Pulitzer prize-winning playwright August Wilson’s works in a deal with HBO. Washington mentioned the deal last night to audiences at An Evening With Denzel Washington & Dr. Todd Boyd at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts. NBC Is Interested In a Drama Series About a Man With a Certain Set Of Skills
Network has ordered straight-to-series an hour-long drama that will follow Brian Mills, the Liam Neeson character from the Taken movie franchise in the early years of his career in the CIA. Lucy Besson, who co-wrote and produced the films, will oversee the prequel series, which is currently looking for a showrunner/head writer. (CBR)
Mark Wahlberg Is Definitely In For ‘Transformers 5’, and Thinks Michael Bay Will Be, Too, but That’s Not Official
Immediately after word came down that Akiva Goldsman is writing the next installment of the franchise, Wahlberg’s participation was confirmed, and it was speculated that Bay was on board, as well. Fox Searchlight Has Put a Film About the 1980s Rescue of Ethiopian Jews Into Development
The studio has acquired a pitch from Tyrant EP and co-creator Gideon Raff, who will write and direct the film based on the 1981 “Opeartion Brothers” rescue of Ethiopian Jews and their relocation to Israel. Comparisons to Ben Affleck’s 2013 Oscar-winning Argo — about the CIA’s 1980 rescue of six Americans during the US hostage crisis in Iran — are being made. (SAA)
