The CW To Redevelop ‘The Notebook’ & ‘Weaveworld’ Series Adaptations
Network is keeping two high-profile projects that it developed this season in contention for the next cycle. The Notebook It, based on the romance novel by Nicholas Sparks and the 2004 feature, and Weaveworld, an adaptation of the horror/fantasy novel by Clive Barker. Both projects will get new writers to pen new incarnations which again will be executive produced by Sparks and Barker, respectively. (DH)
‘Luther’ Creator Neil Cross Has a Brand New Adaptation Up His Sleeve
Writer Cross is working with Endemol Shine, Entertainment 360, and Diogenes, who struck a deal with the Patricia Highsmith estate last year, to adapt all five of the Tom Ripley books. There are five Ripley novels in all, collectively known as the “Ripliad”: The Talented Mr. Ripley, Ripley Underground, Ripley’s Game, The Boy Who Followed Ripley, and Ripley Underwater. (SF)
Julia Roberts Will Produce and Star in Film Adaptation of ‘Wife 22’
Oscar winner is on board the adaptation of author Melanie Gideon’s novel. Gideon previously wrote three YA novels and a memoir, but this marks her first adult-oriented book, published in 2012. Kris Swanberg is writing the script, about a woman in a midlife crisis who agrees to anonymously participate in a survey about marital happiness, only to experience a reawakening through the power of confessing to the mysterious researcher who fields her responses. Don’t Get Too Attached To ‘Togetherness’, as HBO Has Cancelled the Show After the Current Second Season
It was announced today that the show has been canceled by the cable net. Mark and Jay Duplass’ first television series is still airing new episodes of its second season on Sunday nights, but will not return for a third season. Despite low ratings, hope remained for a series with a strong cult fanbase and wide critical support. (IW)
Meanwhile, Fox Wants More Cop and Post-Apocalyptic Comedy, Renews Two Popular Shows
Both Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Last Man On Earth received renewals from the network, with the cop comedy starring Andy Somber and Andre Braugher earning its fourth season and the Will Forte-starring Last Man getting its third. (CB)
CBS Also Gets In On the Action, Renews a Dozen Of Its Shows, Though ‘Supergirl’ Not Yet Among Them
The network has just renewed nearly a dozen of its established hits for next season. NCIS: Los Angeles and NCIS: New Orleans join the previously picked up NCIS, along with Elementary, Scorpion, Blue Bloods, Hawaii Five-O and Madam Secretary, as well as Mom, 2 Broke Girls and the already-renewed The Big Bang Theory. Also on the list, Survivor and The Amazing Race. Perhaps more notable than what CBS ordered today is what didn’t get picked up. (VUL)
Mark Wahlberg’s ‘Patriots Day’ Film Casts Its Mayor
Vincent Curatola is the latest actor to join the growing cast of the CBS Films and Lionsgate feature about the Boston Marathon bombing. Curatola is set to play longtime mayor of Boston, Thomas Menino alongside the star-studded cast that includes Wahlberg, John Goodman, J.K. Simmons, and Jimmy O. Yang. Peter Berg will direct the script written by Matt Chairman. Wahlberg will also serve as producer with Scott Stuber, Hutch Parker, Dylan Clark, Stephen Levinson and Michael Radutzky. (TB)

A report shown at the 2016 World Economic Forum in January says millions of jobs will be lost to robots in the next few years. When thinking about who is most vulnerable, factory workers, drivers, and pilots come to mind. Surely the jobs requiring a human touch, such as artists, entertainers, and managers, will stick around, right? Maybe some of those jobs will be safe. Managers, not so much. (VB)
