Studio has decided not to showcase its upcoming movie releases in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con this year as it feels it can’t prevent the piracy of custom trailers or exclusive footage. That means no panel for Michael Fassbender’s highly anticipated Assassin’s Creed, no first look at Wolverine 3, no footage from Maze Runner: The Death Cure, and no flashy announcement about upcoming X-Men films like Gambit or Deadpool 2. Like the Academy, BAFTA Is Reviewing Its Members’ Voting Privileges, Too
Just like the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts is currently reviewing its membership rolls to decide who should retain voting privileges for its annual BAFTA Awards. But unlike the Academy, whose efforts have proven controversial, BAFTA’s review has gone much more smoothly, winning the approval of the majority of its members. (TR)
Lionsgate Believes In ‘American Pastoral’, Gives the Film a Prime Awards Season Release Date
Mini-major has set October 21st for a limited release of the drama, with Ewan McGregor starring and making his feature directorial debut. The studio will expand the run a week later. The cast includes Uzo Aduba, David Strathairn, Jennifer Connelly, Rupert Evans, Peter Riegert and Dakota Fanning. Lakeshore toppers Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi are producing along with Andre Lamal. John Romano adopted Philip Roth’s novel, published in 1997. (VAR)
Sci-Fi Short ‘Miles’ Gets Feature Film from Open Road & David Goyer
Lakeshore Entertainment and Open Road Films are partnering to co-produce and co-finance the feature film, to be directed by Oliver Daly, based on his original short which started a bidding war amongst producers last year. It was won by David S. Goyer and his Phantom Four Films, who then developed the script with Daly. (CS)
The ‘X-Men’ Series Hints At The Future By Signing Tye Sheridan Up For Two More Films
Fox has a lot of plans for its X-Men Universe – Wolverine 3, Deadpool 2 and New Mutants are all happening, among others. But what about the core X-Men series? Will favorites like James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence be returning? What about the new cast of youngsters that’s been brought in for Apocalypse? It seems the answer to the later question is a big “yes,” as the actor playing Cyclops has confirmed he will be returning, at least twice. (UR)
Rob Lowe, Kristen Bell Join Pantelion Comedy ‘How To Be A Latin Lover’
Raquel Welch and Rob Riggle have also joined Eugenio Derbez in the comedy for Lionsgate’s Pantelion label. Ken Marino is directing the story about an an aging Latin lover who gets dumped by his sugar mama and is forced to to return to live with his estranged sister and her preteen son in their humble home. Sporting a wardrobe consisting mostly of Versace speedos, the man focuses on finding himself another sugar mama to support his expensive tastes. (DH)
