There’s Just No Stopping Ridley Scott, as the Director Signs On To Helm a Western For Fox
Legendary helmer will direct Fox’s movie adaptation of S. Craig Zahler’s Western novel Wraiths of the Broken Land, reteaming with The Martian writer Drew Goddard. Novel, published in 2013, is set in Mexico around 1900 with two sisters forced into prostitution at a gentlemen’s club. Their two brothers and father attempt to rescue them through their outlaw gang which also includes a former slave, an Indian and a brutal gunman (or “wraith”) who is the tactical leader. (VAR)
‘Captain America: Civil War’ Hasn’t Even Been Open a Week Here, and It’s Already Cleared $700 Million
The latest from Marvel Studios added $13.3 million domestically and $18.8 million internationally yesterday, bringing its totals so far to $192.5 million in North America and $512.8 million overseas. Worldwide, the Anthony and Joe Russo-directed movie is up to $705.3 million. The release received an A CinemaScore from audiences and cost $250 million to make before marketing expenses. (CS)
Bryan Cranston Finds His Next Big TV Gig, and It’s Not Here In America
Emmy winner will tackle a whole new genre in his next live action TV role, as he’s signed on to appear in and direct the upcoming Channel 4 show Electric Dreams: The World of Philip K. Dick. Show will premiere in the UK, with Sony Pictures handling international distribution. American fans won’t get to see him in this new series quite as early as the Brits, but it’s likely that Electric Dreams will make it to the US in some form or other. (CB)
Dylan O’Brien on the Mend, in Talks to Lead Possible Franchise ‘American Assassin’
It appears as though the actor is on the mend following a scary accident on the set of Maze Runner: The Death Cure in which he was involved in a serious collision with a vehicle while filming. Now, he’s in talks to take on the lead role in the Lionsgate and CBS Films adaptation of the Vince Flynn novel. Should negotiations lead to a deal, O’Brien would play the role of Mitch Rapp, a counterterrorism operative for the CIA. (COL)
Reunited, and It Feels So Good: Black Bear Pictures Wins ‘Last Days of Night’ Auction
Teddy Schwartzman’s production shingle has won an auction that puts him back together with Graham Moore and Morten Tyldum (as well as producers Nora Grossman and Ido Ostrowsky), the team with whom he made the Best Picture-nominated hit The Imitation Game (and for which Moore won a screenwriting Oscar). New project is based on Moore’s upcoming novel, set for publication by Random House on September 20th. (DH)
Dwayne Johnson Launches YouTube Channel To Collaborate With Other Content Creators and Plans For Original Scripted Series
Sven Bucks Productions, co-founded by Johnson and Dany Garcia, announced the launch of Seven Bucks Digital Studios to their ever-expanding media footprint. The multi-platform production company’s venture will debut this summer. The YouTube channel will deliver monthly collaborations with top digital native talent as well as an action-filled scripted online series. (SAA)
If At First You Don’t Succeed: ‘Locke and Key’ Once Again Being Developed as TV Series
Author Joe Hill has been through the wringer when it comes to attempted adaptations of his comic book series Locke & Key. Now he’s decided to take matters into his own hands and oversee a new TV version. There have so far been two main attempts to bring the comic book to screens, a 2010 TV version from Alex Kurtzman, Bob Orci and writer/producer Josh Friedman that never made it past pilot stage.
