BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY

Awards Spotlight: ‘Nebraska’ Director of Photography Phedon Papamichael on “The Poetry of Black and White” Cinematography

Papamichael has a good shot at landing his first Academy nod—long overdue for a man who’s shot Sideways, The Descendants, 3:10 to Yuma, and The Ides of March, among many others. He also serves as cinematographer on George Clooney’s upcoming Monuments Men, due in theaters in February. (SSN)

Awards Spotlight: Director of Photography Barry Ackroyd on Getting Close to the Action in ‘Captain Phillips’

Paul Greengrass and Barry Ackroyd first worked together on United 93, for which Greengrass earned a Best Director nomination, and followed that up with The Green Zone. In their current collaboration, Captain Phillips, the film captures the drama and intensity of real-life events thanks in great part to Ackroyd’s confident photography, which rivets the audience close to the action. Awards Spotlight: All is Lost’s Director of Photography Frankie DeMarco on Making a “Silent Film”

All Is Lost has almost no dialogue, features long scenes of star Robert Redford—the movie’s only cast member—working on his dying vessel and battling the elements. The challenges allowed DeMarco to capture some of the year’s most arresting visuals. (SSN)

Oscar Analysis Part Three: Why Fox is the Studio to Beat Come the 2015 Academy Awards

While Fox probably won’t find itself awash in Oscar nominations this year, 2014 could mean a turn in fortunes. The films that Fox and Fox Searchlight have on their slates (tentatively, at least) suggest an enviable bounty of Oscar potentials. (SSN)
