Paul Greengrass and Barry Ackroyd first worked together on
United 93, for which Greengrass earned a Best Director nomination, and followed that up with
The Green Zone. In their current collaboration,
Captain Phillips, the film captures the drama and intensity of real-life events thanks in great part to Ackroyd’s confident photography, which rivets the audience close to the action.

All Is Lost has almost no dialogue, features long scenes of star Robert Redford—the movie’s only cast member—working on his dying vessel and battling the elements. The challenges allowed DeMarco to capture some of the year’s most arresting visuals.
