The animated film, the latest offering from Japan’s Studio Ghibli, is about a palm-sized princess found in a bamboo stalk. As she rapidly grows in to a young lady and captivates those around her, she tragically learns of her past and ultimate fate. In addition to an Academy Award nomination,
Kaguya has earned three Annie Awards nominations. The awards ceremony will be held tomorrow.

Honored with five Oscar nominations, including one for Best Editing, the movie is also up for an American Cinema Editors’ Eddie Award, which will be handed out tonight. SSN sat down with the film’s editor, who guided us through the process of one particularly vital scene, in which Andrew (Miles Teller) first learns the true, extreme teaching style of his instructor, Fletcher (J.K. Simmons).

Director David Lowery is busy putting the new version of the story together, working from a script he co-wrote with Toby Halbrooks. It’s Disney’s latest attempt to conjure a fresh take on one of its catalogue titles, this time the live-action/animation-blend 1977 film which saw a young lad befriend a magical dragon. The new movie will apparently deviate from the original by stripping out the musical element and injecting an environmental message into the story.

Chandor cited the always troubling “creative differences” for leaving the Summit project, based on the true-story account of the devastating 2010 BP oil spill. Envisioned as a “big, dramatic blockbuster”, Chandor was writing the screenplay for the movie as well. Mark Wahlberg will star in the film.

In Dubious Battle. The original novel portrays the struggle between labor and capital in 1930s America as close to all-out warfare. Matt Rager is adapting.

After being dropped by Warner Bros., Open Road has picked up the rights and is moving forward with the project, with Jamie Foxx and Michelle Monaghan on board to star. Story centers on a corrupt cop who has to navigate a labyrinthine nightclub where his son is being held hostage by a crime boss.

The distributor has landed
Digging For Fire, starring Jake Johnson (who co-wrote the script with director Swanberg), Rosemarie DeWitt, Orlando Bloom, Brie Larson, Sam Rockwell, Anna Kendrick and Mike Birbiglia. Film follows the discovery of a bone and a gun, which sends a husband and wife on separate adventures over the course of a weekend.

A look at the 30-second TV spot set to run during Sunday’s Super Bowl. The blockbuster sequel to the third-highest grossing movie of all time stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson and James Spader and is written and directed by Joss Whedon. It opens May 1st.
