SSN Pilot Watch 2015: The Five CBS Pilots With Potential

Pilot season is dominating the television industry. Pilots have been ordered, casting is underway, and directors are clamoring to helm the hot comedy or drama that might just become the next Modern Family or Scandal. There’s a mix of book adaptations, spinoffs, reboots, and original content this season and SSN has gotten a sneak peek at some of the scripts that have the potential to go the distance – meaning, the potential to make it to series, get renewed, and maybe even score some Emmy love. Since 1948, the Writer’s Guild of America has honored exceptional accomplishments in film, television, and radio writing at their annual awards show, which is seen by many as a precursor to the Oscars. In each of the Adapted and Original Screenplay categories, eight of the last ten WGA winners have gone on to win an Oscar. (SSN)

The actor is mesmerizing as the wealthy, lonely, manipulative John du Pont. Based on real events, the film and the performance are both tinged with a melancholy, sinister tone that borders on the macabre. Carell’s performance was aided in no small part to makeup and hairstylists Bill Corso and Dennis Liddiard, who are up for an Academy Award. (SSN)

When Argentine writer/director Damián Szifron’s Wild Tales (Relatos Salvajes) premiered at Cannes last May, it was saluted for its humor. Produced by Pedro Almodovar and his brother Agustin, the darkly humorous film is made up of six vignettes connected by the theme of vengeance, and what happens when the oppressed start, well, going wild.
