The director was sentenced to 10 years, but will serve two years as part of the plea agreement, because he is a first-time offender. He also was prohibited from serving as a director, assistant director or in any supervisory production capacity that involves the safety of employees, and he was sentenced to 360 hours of community service. Miller will serve two years in custody, pay a $25,000 fine and has agreed not to direct during his probation period. Charges against his wife, producer Jody Sevin, were waived.

The Oscar-winning director will make her next film about Bowe Bergdahl, an America soldier who left his Army base, was captured by the Taliban, and then tortured and held prisoner for five years. Bergdahl’s release as part of a prisoner exchange became clouded with controversy as the soldier deserted his unit after becoming disillusioned with America’s presence in Afghanistan.
