The Third Time Is Indeed the Charm For ‘Furious 7’, Which Once Again Wins the Weekend

Universal’s biggest film ever brought in $29 million over the three days, giving it over $294 million in domestic grosses since its April 3rd open. Paul Blart Mall Cop 2 came in second, with $24 million, while another Universal pic, Unfriended, came in third with $16 million. DWA’s Home came in fourth, while The Longest Ride rounded out the top five. (BO)

‘Furious 7’ Also Just Set a Record For the Fastest Ever To a Billion Dollars

It only took 17 days for the film to cross the mark, the first time a film has ever needed as little as 17 days to make one billion dollars in worldwide ticket sales. It’s also the first Universal Pictures release to cross that threshold. Jurassic Park did, as well, but that was only after a 3D re-release. (VF)

TriStar Gets Into the 2017 Oscar Race, Announces November 11th, 2016 Release For ‘Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk’

Three-time Oscar winner Ang Lee’s new film, which stars stars newcomer Joe Alwyn, Garrett Hedlund, Steve Martin, Ben Platt, Kristen Stewart, Vin Diesel and Chris Tucker, will have a Veteran’s Day release and be in prime position for that year’s awards season. Lee is using state-of-the-art Sony cameras, shooting in native 3D, high resolution, and making history with a frame rate that seemed impossible until now. (CS)

Dick Cook Launches a New Company, Replete With $150 Million In Chinese Money

The former Disney chairman announced he was launching Dick Cook Studios, a new media company, with a $150 million investment from Citic Guoan Group Co. Ltd., a division of the Chinese conglomerate Citic Group. Cook was chairman of the Walt Disney Studios from 2002 to 2009, having spent a total of 40 years with the Mouse House, overseeing the likes of Pirates of the Caribbean and National Treasure.  He was ousted, however, in 2009. Star Wars Celebration Gave Fans Some ‘Rogue One’ News This Weekend

Director Gareth Edwards showed the first teaser to a packed house and revealed plot details. The film will take place between Episode III and Episode IV and, as has long been rumored, will revolve around a mission to steal the plans for the Death Star. Felicity Jones will star in the film as a Rebel fighter. It is set for release December 16th, 2016. (TP)

After Just a Single Season, MTV Decides It Has Had Enough Of ‘Eye Candy’

Leading lady Victoria Justice made the announcement Saturday via Twitter that the freshman drama has been canceled. An MTV representative also confirmed that the show will not be returning. The Viacom-owned cable network picked up the 10-episode drama in February 2014. The series opened in January and averaged 592,000 total viewers during its run. (THR)

Ben Stiller Confirms That His ‘Zoolander 2’ Female Lead Is Penelope Cruz

The director-producer-star of the long-awaited sequel posted a funny and embarrassing picture of the actress on his Instagram account to let the world know the Oscar-winning actress had officially joined the production. She joins Stiller, Owen Wilson, Will Ferrell and Christine Taylor, as well as fellow newcomers Kristen Wiig and Cyrus Arnold. The film is currently shooting. (CB)

Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for its Man of Steel sequel, starring Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Amy Adams, Holly Hunter and a host of others, hits theaters March 25th, 2016. (YT)

Twentieth Century Fox has released the first full-length trailer from the upcoming reboot of the franchise based on the Marvel comic book series. Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell and Michael B. Jordan star in the film, directed by Josh Trank and in theaters August 7th. (VAR)
