‘Ant-Man’ Crawls To the Top Of the Box Office Hill, Beats Out ‘Minions’ For First Place

Marvel’s last film in its fabled Phase Two took in a solid but not earth-shattering $58 million, ahead of Minions second weekend total of $50.2 million, giving it just under $217 million in its first 10 days of release, and ahead of the pace of its predecessor, Despicable Me 2, which had just over $197 million in the same period. Train wreck opened third with an impressive $30.2 million, with Inside Out fourth at $11.6 million and Jurassic World fifth with $11.3 mil. (BO)

Will Smith Is Headed Back To High School, Will Produce the Comedy ‘Ultra’

Smith and his production company, Overbrook Entertainment, have struck a deal with Sony Pictures to produce the high school comedy, the plot of which is being kept under wraps, other than it being an R-rated event movie starring teenagers. The film will be produced by Smith, Jada Pinkett-Smith and James Lassiter for Overbrook, with Sandy Stern of Single Cell Pictures. Wunderkind twin brothers Shea and Evan Mirzai are writing the script. (SAA)

This Town Ain’t Big Enough, Et Cetera: Two Films Titled ‘Mother’s Day’ Set For 2016 Release

Garry Marshall is mounting an ensemble film to star Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson and Jason Sudeikis. Meanwhile Paul Duddridge and Nigel Levy are co-directing the Danielle James and Amy Williams-produced drama Mother’s Day with a cast that includes Susan Sarandon, Courteney Cox, Sharon Stone, Christina Ricci, Paul Wesley, Roselyn Sanchez and Eva Amurri Martino. It Appears That It Will Be Two and Done For Sam Mendes and the James Bond Franchise

The director of 2012’s Skyfall and the upcoming Spectre said in an interview that he would not “go down that road again” after finishing the new film. He also revealed that the movie’s theme song has been completed, but did not disclose the title or artist. The movie hits theaters on November 6th. (COL)

Another Day, Another Bit Of ‘Ghostbusters’ Intel, With Director Paul Feig Now Revealing Character Names

According to a tweet from the director, the four stars of the film, Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones, are playing Erin Gilbert, Jillian Holtzmann, Abby Yates and Patty Tolan. However, there was no word from the director, or anyone else, as to which actress is playing which character. (SF)

That New ‘Supergirl’ Show Is Adding an Important Character From the Comics To the Cast

The third episode of CBS’ freshman superhero series will introduce the recurring character of Lucy Lane. In her mid-20s to early 30s, Lucy is described as as brash, funny and beautiful as her sister Lois, yet strong, smart and successful in her own right. She will also be, in keeping with DC Comics lore, an ex-girlfriend of Kara’s (Melissa Benoist) new CatCo media conglom colleague, Daily News transplant Jimmy Olsen (Mehcad Brooks). (TVL)

When They Do the Big ‘CSI’ Finale In September, Elisabeth Shue Won’t Be Part Of It

The actress, who has been on the CBS drama since 2012, will not participate in the show-wrapping two-hour special planned for September 27th. It’s unclear how the producers will handle Finlay’s absence from the show’s swan song. Original series stars William Petersen and Marg Helgenberger will return for the special, while current CSI star Ted Danson will continue to stay with the franchise by moving over to the show’s latest spin-off, CSI: Cyber.
