Miramax Changes Hands Again, Sells To beIN Media Group
Company has acquired 100% of the studio for an undisclosed sum, the Doha-based broadcaster announced today. It bought the company from a consortium of investors that includes Qatar Investment Authority and Colony Capital. They, in turn, purchased the studio in 2010 from Disney for $660 million. Miramax has a library of 700 titles. (VAR)
New Emmy Rules Open Categories to YouTube and Other Streaming Shorts
Starting this year, the Emmys will give more attention to digital and emerging platforms by adding new short form categories and expanding its definition of the genre to include more projects from the likes of Maker Studios, Fullscreen, Crackle, Awesomeness TV, YouTube Red and Adult Swim. Additionally, the Academy is opening up the writing and directing categories for comedy and drama from five to six nominees — among several other rule changes. (THR)
The Inevitable Has Once Again Happened, as Netflix Renews ‘Fuller House’ For Season Two
The Full House reboot has officially been given another go round by the streaming giant. And now there’s even hope the Olsen twins may reprise Michelle in future episodes. Fuller House, which flips things around to have D.J. Tanner-Fuller raise her three boys with the help of her sister Stephanie and BFF Kimmy, debuted on February 26th. Disney Has Big Plans For Oscar-Winning ‘Big Hero 6’, Announces Production Of a New Animated TV Series
Series has begun production for a 2017 premiere on Disney XD platforms around the world. Emmy Award-winning producers Mark McCorkle and Bob Schooley, creators and executive producers of the global hit Disney Channel series Kim Possible, are the executive producers. The series picks up immediately following the events in the feature film, and continues the adventures and friendship of 14-year-old tech genius Hiro and his compassionate, cutting-edge robot Baymax. More than 10 years after High School Musical became a global phenomenon, Disney Channel is getting ready to return to East High one more time. A nationwide casting search began today for a planned Disney Channel Original Movie, High School Musical 4, that will continue the story of the sensation and introduce new East High Wildcats and their cross-town school rivals, the West High Knights. Jeffrey Hornaday is attached to direct and choreograph the movie. (SAA)
AMC Wants To Be In the Ridley Scott Business, Green Lights Horror Anthology Series ‘The Terror’
Cable network today announced it had green-lit the series executive-produced by Scott. It’s based on the 2007 book by Dan Simmons, which postulated that, instead of dying of pneumonia and lead poisoning, the men of the doomed Franklin expedition of 1845 were instead eaten by a monster. David Kajganich and Soo Hugh will serve as showrunners. (VUL)
