Awards Spotlight: Inside Llewyn Davis’ Mary Zophres on Being “The Luckiest Costume Designer in Hollywood”

Joel and Ethan Coen have worked with Zophres exclusively since Fargo in 1995. Their collaboration has thus far led to Zophres’s first Oscar nomination for True Grit in 2011.With her masterly work in the Coens’ Inside Llewyn Davis, in which she captures a sartorial snapshot of the 1950s transitioning into the 1960s, she’s being discussed for another one. Awards Spotlight: American Hustle’s Michael Wilkinson on Designing Costumes with 70′s Glamour & “Sinatra-Esque Appeal”

As Zack Snyder’s go-to costume designer, Wilkinson redesigned Superman’s iconic costume in this year’s Man of Steel, and it’s also his job to outfit Ben Affleck as he suits up. Wilkinson is responsible for creating the costumes in American Hustle, a real-life story set against the backdrop of the late ‘70s, bringing a sense of reality to the proceedings. (SSN)

British costume designer Michael O’Connor won for his work on The Duchess in 2009, and was nominated again in 2012 for Cary Fukunaga’s Jane Eyre. Along the way, he’s designed costumes for films as diverse as The Last King of Scotland, Dredd, and the upcoming Suite Francaise. He’s now on the awards radar for his work on director and star Ralph Fiennes’ visually sumptuous, 19th century love story, The Invisible Woman. (SSN)
