We’ve been looking at this year’s hot pilot scripts for the last few weeks here at SSN, and for our final round we’re doing a sampling of some of the new projects that could be the next big thing on cable. There are modern comedies about a woman on the verge of a breakdown, sexy dramas from Soderbergh, fantasy and magic at Syfy, and gritty period dramas. Take a look and keep an eye out for these potential breakout hits.

It’s been a busy week in Hollywood, as a host of new attachments happen on existing projects, while plenty of new projects are announced, including the adaptation of a classic, 60-year-old sci-fi novel.

TODAY’S HEADLINES
Director James Mangold, who directed 2013’s
The Wolverine, confirmed via Twitter that he and Hugh Jackman will tell the next installment of the character’s story for a March 3rd, 2017 release. Almost nothing is known about the sequel, which is still in development at 20th Century Fox, except that David James Kelly is writing the script (which could see a Wolverine and Professor Xavier team-up).

The mastermind behind the movie trilogy is on board to executive produce the show, which would feature well-known television action stars of yore, in much the same way as the films have recycled '80s and '90s heroes. Avi Lerner, who also produces the "Expendables" films, will co-executive produce. Television veteran Shane Brennan will serve as showrunner, and will also co-write the series alongside scribes Greg Coolidge and Kirk Ward.

Company is teaming with producer Rachael Horovitz on the adaptation, which examines the evidence in the case against Jeffrey MacDonald, who was convicted in 1979 of murdering his pregnant wife and two daughters. A Green Beret physician, MacDonald claimed that the murders were committed by drug-crazed hippies. He was sentenced to serve a life sentence for each of the three murders, and remains in federal prison in Cumberland, Maryland.

TBS announced it’s signed longtime
Daily Show correspondent Bee to host a new comedy show, after already bringing fellow show correspondent (and Bee’s husband) Jason Jones on board for a new sitcom. Bee’s show, which is in the early stages of development, is being planned as a platform for Bee “to apply her smart and satirical point of view to current and relevant issues.

The indie actress has co-created and will star in
The OA, a drama just picked up by Netflix. The show's plot and premise are currently under wraps, but eight hour-long episodes will air next year. Marling's co-writer and director for the show is Zal Batmanglij, with whom she co-wrote
Sound of My Voice and
The East. She also co-wrote and starred in
Another Earth.

Sundance faves, world premieres and some pretty cool events (Mary J. Blige concert!) highlight the lineup, which includes new features from big names like Kristen Stewart, Jason Sudeikis, Zooey Deschanel, Russell Brand, Adam Driver, Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette, Aubrey Plaza, Lily Tomlin and more. This year's Tribeca Film Festival runs from April 15 through April 26.

Twentieth Century Fox has partnered with Getty's iStock photo to promote the upcoming comedy with a series of drab stock photos featuring the cast of the film, about a group of small business staffers on a biz trip gone awry. The limited edition images can be downloaded for free exclusively at Getty Images' iStock, the company's collection of crowd-sourced royalty-free images, media and design elements.

The first look at the upcoming adaptation of the Gillian Flynn novel, starring Charlize Theron. The story follows Theron as Libby Day, a woman who, at the age of 7, survives the massacre of her family and testifies against her brother as the murderer. Twenty-five years later, a group obsessed with solving notorious crimes confronts her with questions about the horrific event. No U.S. release date has been announced.
