As unlikely as it is that a show called
Jane the Virgin would even exist, the CW drama has broken barriers and exceeded expectations on several levels. The show gave the youth-driven network its first Golden Globe nominations, including a win for Best Actress – Musical or Comedy, for star Gina Rodriguez. On a show steeped in telenovela lore with all the crazy twists and turns to go with it, Rodriguez got to run the gamut in terms of acting.

After a long stretch in which Jim Parsons has dominated this category, there are suddenly a bevy of newcomers here, including a brand new frontrunner whose character wears dresses and the renewed emergence of a standup comic at the top of his game, not to mention at least three and possibly five potential nominees from HBO and Showtime series.

The industry-only annual trade fair for the video game industry kicked off yesterday at the LA Convention Center. If you look deeper than all the CGI explosions, gunfire and magical elves there’s some captivating stories to be heard. This is a multi-billion dollar industry of course, so there’s bound to be a good cinematic experience or two and that’s just what SSN found.

OTHER HEADLINES
The film had been set up at New Regency and RatPac Entertainment, but even though New Regency made
12 Years a Slave with Plan B, the backers wanted Michod and producers to lower the proposed $60 million to $70 million budget. The filmmakers balked, putting the project up for grabs, and Netflix revealed June 8 that it had swooped in and grabbed
War Machine. Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos was willing to pay the price tag.

Doug Miro and Carlo Bernard are rewriting a script based on an original screenplay by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift for Skydance Productions. The Bermuda Triangle seems to be a hot spot for Hollywood right now as this is the second project currently brewing about the area. Juliet Snowden and Stiles White are rewriting the script for Universal's untitled Bermuda Triangle movie. Meanwhile, Warner has a Bermuda Triangle script from Dan Kunka.

Sony Pictures Animation has released the final trailer from the upcoming animated sequel, starring the voice talents of Adam Sandler, Steve Buscemi, Mel Brooks, Selena Gomez and David Spade. Directed by Genndy Tartkovsky, from a script by Adam Sandler and Robert Smigel, the movie hits theaters September 25th.
