As always, there were surprises, snubs, and controversies when this year’s Oscar nominations were announced. Among the controversies were
Interstellar’s twin nominations in the sound categories. The film’s booming soundscape had some critics struggling to hear dialogue, while others praised it for its immersive atmosphere.

The Theory Of Everything, which has been nominated for five Oscars. Star Eddie Redmayne, writer-producer Anthony McCarten, and producer Lisa Bruce were there to answer questions.

Concussion, Smith will play Dr. Bennet Omalu, the forensic neuropathologist who single-handedly made the first discovery of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy in a pro football player, raising public awareness for the degenerative disease. Peter Landesman wrote and directed the film, which co-stars Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Alec Baldwin, Bitsie Tulloch, and Albert Brooks.

The Oscar winner is attached to the Matthew Michael Carnahan-scripted adaptation of Christopher McDougall’s best-selling book,
Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Super Athletes, And The Greatest Race The World Has Never Seen. The film is being mobilized by Di Bonaventura Pictures, Outlaw Productions and LD Entertainment. The book’s a bestseller in 12 countries and sold 2 million copies in the U.S.

Yost is teaming with Noah Wyle for a limited series examining the political battles in the U.S. over the decision to enter World War II. Called
Those Angry Days, series will focus on the period between 1937 and 1941, as war spread across Europe while isolationist forces in Congress and elsewhere railed against the prospect of America coming to Britain’s aid in the fight against Hitler.

The indie distributor has signed a multi-year, multi-picture, first-look deal in which Brand Inc. will produce at least four cast-driven films a year for the distributor across a range of genres, including family, kids, faith, action and holiday. The 12-picture, three year deal sees Cinedigm have all North American rights to the movies, including theatrical, digital, VOD and physical home entertainment.

The legendary singer and the creator of
True Blood will make an hour-long period drama set against the complex and volatile backdrop of 18th century Vienna. To be called
Virtuoso, it centers around musical prodigies at the Academy of Musical Excellence. Ball will write. executive produce and direct the project, with John on board as a producer.

The project, written by Aaron Sorkin, has begun shooting with its final cast, with Michael Fassbender playing Jobs, Seth Rogen playing Steve Wozniak, and the rest of the cast filled by Kate Winslet, Katherine Waterson, Jeff Daniels, Michael Stuhlbarg and Perla Haney-Jardine. Christian Bale was originally set to play the title role, but famously bowed out in late 2014.

Mistress America, before the festival began, and partnered with producer Indian Paintbrush to snag
Me and Earl and the Dying Girl earlier this week, the company has now spent $9 million on the period piece, starring Saorise Ronan as a young woman who emigrates from Ireland to the titular New York borough in 1952.
