The studio behind Avengers: Age of Ultron is courting the Selma director for one of its upcoming installments in the Marcel Cinematic Universe’s ongoing franchise, with the thinking that it will be either the Black Panther movie, which will star Chadwick Boseman, or the Captain Marvel film, which will star a still-not-announced actress. The Black Panther film is due in July of 2018, while Captain Marvel is scheduled for that November. (TW)
After signing on for The Basis Of Sex and being in talks for Alex Garland’s Annihilation, the actress has jumped aboard director Rebecca Zlotowski’s Planetarium. Story follows two sisters (Portman and Lily Rose Depp) who appear to possess the ability to communicate with ghosts. They have a fateful meeting with a French film producer while performing in Paris in the 1930s. (EMP)
The Let’s Be Cops director got feedback from Spielberg as a teenager, and the result of that was the story Destiny, which he is now writing with Dana Stevens. The pitch is a supernatural love story about a struggling designer who must overcome his fears and uncertainty, and now DreamWorks will be making the project. (DH)
Cable network is spending $5 million per episode for the eight-part limited series, spearheaded by the True Detective Emmy-winner and written by Eric Roth and Hossein Amini. Based on the bestseller by Caleb Carr, story is set in late 1800s New York City and revolves around the search for a serial killer by then-police commissioner Theodore Roosevelt, a doctor and a reporter. Paramount TV began shopping the series last month. (VAR)
The sisters also wrote the script for the project, known as Woodshock and about which little is known. The two will only confirm that the project is based on an "original concept" has been in development "for several years." A24 has already scooped up distribution rights to the film. There had been much speculation about whether Jackman would return as Wolverine — he has recently said that his appearance in 2017’s third solo outing for the character would be his swan song — and also whether Tatum would debut as Gambit. Now, a Quebec casting call has listed both actors as being a part of the enormous cast, which also includes Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Rose Byrne, Nicholas Hoult and Oscar Isaac. Lee’s next film, Chiraq, will be his take on the ancient Greek comedy Lysistrata, updating it to tell a tale of a woman’s quest to bring an end to gang warfare in the Windy City. The project may feature the soundtrack involvement of Kanye West and Jennifer Hudson, while Sam Jackson and John Cusack are understood to be lining up to appear in the hot title. (SD)
Universal Pictures has released the first trailer from director John M. Chu’s adaptation of the fan favorite ’80s cartoon, starring Aubrey Peeples, Stefanie Scott, Aurora Perrineau, Hayley Kiyoko, Ryan Guzman, Molly Ringwald and Juliette Lewis. The movie hits theaters October 23rd. (CS)
